Middle Passage:
One of the main themes of this book, Copper Sun is the Middle Passage. The Middle Passage is the time period when the slaves were on the ship and are being taken across the Atlantic. This is the hardest part for the slaves because it involves the slaves leaving their familie's and being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean. The Middle Passage shows us how the slaves were treated on the ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. Men and women were beaten to a pulp and some were even raped along the way.
Some of the more extreme cases were of Women getting raped by multiple men whilst be beaten. Men were taken to a quarter of the ship and beaten for multiple things such as talking, whistling, and fleeing. The men and women that were aboard the ship's were meaningless to the whites among the crew of the ship, the only thing they cared about was the money they received from carrying the large capacity of slaves from Africa to the America's. As long as the slaves were kept alive they still got their pay for the load. Once the slaves arrived in America they were sold as is to the highest bidder.
